What people are saying about the book?
This book won't be for everyone - A.B, UK
It says on the back cover “On our geekometer scale this book is extreme!” as
it's extremely technical but all of the concepts within are explained with
clear examples.
This book is an ideal tool for all of those like me who find that the standard
Microsoft fare, when it comes to technical material about AD, is somewhat
lacking.
For anyone who has been to one of John and Sally's presentations at Microsoft,
Tech Ed etc you'll know what to expect. The book really lets you get your
hand's dirty and see what's running under the hood of Microsoft Active
Directory.
A.F, UK
As someone who works in an Active Directory environment, I appreciate this
isn't going to be a book that you'll use day in, day out but if you ever want
to do a lot of the stuff in the book e.g. locating the security principal for
an unknown account, you're unlikely to find out how to do it anywhere else.
A must for my suitcase! - MCS, UK
I was in Australia with some tricky replication problems to solve (updating
USNs via LDP). Thank goodness I had packed your book in my suitcase.
No recommendation needed - R.B, MCT, The
Netherlands
Anyone who has attended one of John and Sally’s sessions would not need any
additional recommendations to buy the book.
Best "under the hood" book available for AD -
G.G, Germany
The examples are real-world type of examples - the authors don't simply repeat
other tech-information, but put it into context allowing the reader to really
use the features of AD for their environment. This is not a beginner’s book -
I'd suggest it for the experienced, who want to dig-down even deeper.
First class stuff - D. B, UK
The reality is that there are many books on Active Directory and by and large
they all operate at a similar level. The difficulty is that there is little or
no information that goes deeper into the workings of the AD. When I was stuck
with a requirement to find out how to reveal deleted items in the AD I couldn’t
find any way of exposing tombstoned items. Then I was recommended this book,
and sitting on the train each day I have worked my way through all the chapters
including the Rule OIDs. First class stuff. I don't need all this information
all the time, however when I do need this info, nothing else will do and there
is no other source that I could find (apart from maybe paying vast sums of
money to PSS)...
I would recommend this highly - K.S, San
Francisco
This is a must for anyone who works closely with AD - development, architecture
or operations. It is the only book of its kind, and believe me... when you
really NEED to know, you will be glad you have it.
AD for Dummies? - P.R, PM, Redmond
I saw the book on AL’s desk and thought what’s he doing with a baby’s guide to
AD? I picked it up and understood why. Now I have one close at hand.
An excellent reference book that every consultant should
have to hand. - G.C, West Midlands, UK
John and Sally have taken the AD apart in this book and produced an excellent
guide on the internals of the Active Directory. This is first place I have
found a detailed explanation of how Ambiguous Name Resolution actually works
and resolves it searches. Every topic is backed up with detailed and well
thought out examples to allow the reader to really understand the subject.
Just buy it - N.V, UK
Every now and then an IT book comes along that is destined to become a classic.
This is one such book. Why? Because at a time when much IT literature is
derivative, John Craddock and Sally Storey have succeeded in producing an
original work. AD Forestry shows you how to use Microsoft's undocumented ldp
tool to expose and understand AD's innards. Anyone who works with AD on a
regular basis will find the techniques described invaluable.
Not sold by weight - G.L, Denmark
I’m used to buying IT books by weight and serious covers. Your book was a
shock! It’s fantastic that I don’t need to read through page after page of
stuff that I already know just to find the odd gem. Every page is a gem, thank
you.
We wouldn’t be without it - R.N, PSS, UK
I don’t think it looks very professional but we wouldn’t be without it.
It will see good usage in my eager hands. - P.R,
Microsoft, Redmond
I am once again impressed by the focus and clarity of content while retaining
the friendly approach - a wildly successful combination in this technical
universe of computing!
